2022 International Aviation Art Contest

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) invites you to participate in the 2022 International Aviation Art Contest. This annual event is an initiative to engage students and to challenge young people to illustrate the importance of aviation through art. The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) has hosted the contest since 1989 and the U.S. portion is conducted by the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO), through the Aviation Bureaus and Divisions in each state.

The theme for this year is “Design Your Perfect Aircraft.” Is it a glider, a jet, helicopter, or a hot air balloon? What would power it through the sky? Would it be big or small? What special features would make pilots and passengers excited to be in the air? It is the hope that the youngsters will be inspired by the ‘behind the scenes’ work of aviation industry specialists.

Please share this contest information with all eligible students, between the ages of 6 and 17, in your school(s). Refer to the NASAO brochure. Make sure to have the students pay particular attention to the Contest Rules section which specifies the size of the artwork and other requirements, including the types of art medium that are acceptable. Only one artist per entry allowed; group projects are not permitted. Ensure that student names do NOT appear on the front of the artwork.

The contest brochure is posted on:

All entries must have a completed Certificate of Authenticity affixed to the back (available on the brochure). Please be certain that all information is included on the form. Entries with incomplete information will be disqualified. Required fields are designated with an asterisk and must include the Student’s Age, Date of Birth, and Signature of Parent or Teacher. We are looking forward to another successful contest this year. All entries must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, January 18th, 2022.

It is time to get out your favorite artist supplies and give free rein to your imagination to create your work that combines the flights of the past with the dreams of the future in this year’s “Design Your Perfect Aircraft” art contest.

Artwork is judged, at least in part, for its creative use of this year’s theme in relation to the aviation world. The first, second and third place winners will be forwarded to Washington DC for the National level of the contest. Winning entries of the National contest will be forwarded to the International level of the contest.
