Statewide Long-Range
Transportation Plan Update Available

Copies of Transportation Choices 2025, New Jersey's long-range transportation plan update, are now available through the Department of Transportation.

The plan prospectively examines over the next 25 years the issues of commuting, goods-movement and travel in the most densely populated and most heavily traveled state in the nation, said Transportation Commissioner James Weinstein.

"Many of the investment choices we make today with respect to our transportation system will have a great effect on the health of our economy, communities and environment well into the future," the Commissioner added. "Transportation planning, especially in New Jersey, is a full time activity. This plan will serve as our road map as we endeavor to meet our future needs in an ever growing state."

The long-range plan is the result of detailed technical analyses and an extensive public outreach program. Although the plan stresses the need to repair and renovate New Jersey's aging highways, bridge and public transportation facilities, it also examines the critical issues of congestion and mobility, as well as the crucial interrelationship between transportation and land use. The plan also takes a special look at the transportation needs of the state's major cities.

Although projected population and jobs growth will likely lead to more congestion on our transportation system, the long-range plan identifies approaches to manage this increase through investing in public transit, applying advanced technologies to make our system more efficient, encouraging trip reduction and modestly increasing highway capacity based on need.

Transportation Choices 2025 was developed by the NJDOT and NJ Transit as a "living plan." Public outreach will continue through the plan's website located at www.njchoices.com, and through public meetings and discussions with key stakeholders. Copies of the plan are available on the project website and from the NJDOT's Bureau of Statewide Planning, P.O. Box 609, Trenton, NJ 08625.
